Gyroscopic Instruments

The photograph shows a Direct Reading Compass (DRC) depicting the scale of a p- type compass. The cross- wires shown opposite the North Datum represent the north- seeking end of the compass needle. The scratch index (shown opposite the 52 scale reading) is the Lubber Line representing the direction of the aircraft nose. Before taking a reading, the scale grid- ring must be set free so that the North Datum can be aligned with the cross- wires. The aircraft heading is then read opposite the Lubber Line.
