When we talk about human fertility, infertility is also included. The absence of one is the presence of the other. Religion; folklore; and medicine have made a detailed study of fertility. According to Religion, fertility is a gender based question. Folklore (or tradition) suggests that fertility is a gift from gods or goddesses. According to modern medicine, fertility is both a woman and man’s condition which can be treated by family planning intervention.

Unlike religion; folklore; and medicine, the Food Chain principle suggests that fertility (or infertility) is a result of the food we eat and the source of that food. For example, if an agricultural farmer applies inorganic fertilizers to the soil, then the human consumer will absorb the fertilizers in her body and her fertility will be affected. Similarly, animal feeds and drugs can be passed on in meat and milk.
Food Chain also suggests that Nutritive food like fish; vegetables and fruits should be eaten in abundant supply. It also suggests that couples should be in their youthful age to gain healthy pregnancies.

Un like in medicine, Food Chain is not applicable to family planning intervention.
